5 Magical Things we’d love to see at the American Hogwarts

This week, J.K. Rowling has been strongly hinting that an American version of Hogwarts will show up in the new Harry Potter prequel film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Needless to say, her reveal kind of broke the Internet, with everyone from TIME to Entertainment Weekly guessing where this magical school might be located.

But here at BookTrib we’re less concerned with location and more concerned with just how “American” the wizarding school is going to be. Will there be red-white-and-blue flags plastered on every castle wall? Will amber waves of grain be wafting in the background? Here are our five suggestions for how to milk the ‘murica out of a states-side Hogwarts:

1. Correspondence by Bald Eagle

Sure, we have a lot of owls in this country. But we also have eagles. BALD EAGLES. What better way to get your wizard mail than clutched in the talons of a soaring, majestic creature? Everything in America is bigger, so let’s make sure those acceptance letters are delivered with as much terrifying fanfare as possible.

2. Taco Tuesdays

The feasts at Hogwarts are legendary, filled with a bunch of food we Americans have never heard of – like Yorkshire pudding and treacle tart. We want at least a little bit of our hot-lunch culture to seep into the American Hogwarts dining hall: imagine Taco Tuesdays, Pizza Fridays or Mystery Meat Mondays. It just wouldn’t be an American school without at least one limp pile of french fries.

3. Quidditch Cheerleaders

Here in America, we take our sports seriously—including the cheerleading. Quidditch is fast-paced and magical, so just imagine how cool the cheerleaders could be. We want to see pom-poms that shoot magic sparks, cheers that are secret sabotaging spells, and pyramids that actually defy gravity.

4. Magic Prom

Harry and his friends went to a Yule Ball, but that doesn’t exactly scream “America.” Prom is a high school tradition, and there’s no reason wizards can’t partake. Plus, think about it: an Under the Sea prom could actually take place under the sea.

5. A True-to-Scale Paul Bunyan

Giants are already a Harry Potter thing, so why can’t we have a massive Paul Bunyan roaming around the grounds, terrifying small children and hanging with his big blue ox? He could even be a professor. We’re thinking history or woodworking.
